Hi! I'm Derek Nolan, a freelance web developer based in Limerick. I'm always interested in what businesses around the place are doing and love hearing about interesting projects coming out of Limerick.
I pride myself in my ability to encourage SME's along their digital journey by offering the simplest, most transparent advice I can. So if you have a question, I'll look forward to hearing it. Click 'Contact' above to get in touch.
Feel free to check out my skill set and see the tools I use by clicking on 'Skills' above. Or see some projects that I have worked on previously by selecting 'Portfolio'.
Here are some working examples of my skills. This rotating cube uses a combination of CSS and jQuery. Clicking on it causes a form to pop up asking you for your email address. It makes the process of email collection for digital marketing a little more fun. When the email is submitted, you will notice that we are not redirected in order to create the database query. I have used Ajax to handle this request so we stay on the page. When the Ajax request returns successful it closes out the process and leaves a thank you message.

Hover your mouse over this area and scroll to draw the image. If you don't have a mouse wheel, try pressing the down button on your keyboard.
Press the arrows to the right to see the animation draw itself.
This effect makes use of SVG animations, a relatively new tool available to us, and upon scrolling appears as if the image is drawing itself. The purpose of this is to reward users for their scrolling efforts. We can use similar methods to encourage the user along the path that we plot for them and enhance their experience. SVG animations can provide a wealth of practical solutions to UX challenges.
The Back End...
I primarily use PHP as my server-side language. For bespoke Application builds I'm inclined to reach for a nice framework such as Laravel or Yii.
However, we all know there's no point in reinventing the wheel so when it comes to an SME's business requirements, a good content management system won't lead us astray. For ecommerce I use OpenCart. An open source solution that offers almost everything an online store could need right out of the box.
And for brochure sites I go for the most famous CMS - Wordpress, which now accounts for 25% of the internet today!
This site uses Wordpress with a custom built theme.
LIT International OfficeI worked with Surge Media Limerick on a website build for LIT International Office whose primary objective is to recruit and manage international students. This project has some interesting scroll and hover effects. Click below to check out the site. Visit LIT International Office »
